I read in his Modern Masters book that Bruce Timm based Superman’s design for the animated series off an old Hercules cartoon. I think I found it.

Villains Month #1 - Mister Mxyzptlk
For the month of October, I’m gonna be drawing a villain/monster per day. Cause it’s Halloween and it’s spooky. Don’t question it ok ssssh
Mxyzptlk is one of my favourite Superman villains. If you’re not familar with him, he put in a very memorable appearance in Superman The Animated Series voiced by the wonderful Gilbert Gottfried.
Nine different suits that Superman has worn over the last seventy-four years
I don’t care how redunk it was, I really loved the Electric Blue Superman design.

Action Comics #775
Oh and in case you’re wondering or care, I enjoyed Superman vs The Elite. I thought it was a tightly packed iteration of this story reflecting the extremes of hero designs and concepts pioneered by the likes of Image in the mid to late 90’s.
Thanks for uploading this, because whenever anyone says they dislike Superman for reasons like him being a boyscout or unrealistic or the like, I point them towards the comic “What’s so funny about Truth, Justice, & The American Way?”, and say: “If you read only one Superman comic for the rest of your life, ever, before giving up on him? Make it this one.”
They don’t always do it, but to those who do, its an interesting conversation afterwards.
